For 2023, there are some codes that may be of importance for acupuncturists to be aware of.
Here are the new codes added to specifically identify annulus fibrosus defect (disc) of the lumbar and lumbosacral spines.
M51 Intervertebral annulus fibrosus defect
.A0: lumbar region, unspecified size
.A1: small, lumbar region
.A2: large, lumbar region
.A3: lumbosacral region, unspecified size
.A4: small, lumbosacral region
.A5 large, lumbosacral region
For any dates of service on or after October 1, 2022 the new codes must be used and American Acupuncture Council Network (AACN) has a list of the complete code updates.
