Are you confused about how to bill for an acupuncture office visit?
An acupuncture office visit known as Evaluation and Management (E/M) services has specific billing guidelines.
Here are some important things to know about billing for acupuncture E/M services:
E/M services can be billed on the initial patient evaluation.
Bill a new patient for their first acupuncture visit using CPT codes 99202 to 99205.
E/M services can be billed for periodic follow-up evaluations (every 30 days or approximately at 12 visits using CPT codes 99211 – 99215) with established acupuncture patients.
Frequently used acupuncture treatment CPT codes include:
97810: Initial Acupuncture Session (Tip: do not report this in conjunction with 97813; use one or the other)
97811: Subsequent Unit of Acupuncture (You may use it in conjunction with either 97810 or 97813)
97813: Initial Acupuncture with Electrical Stimulation (Don’t report this in conjunction with 97810; use one or the other)
97814: Subsequent Unit of Acupuncture with Electrical Stimulation (This may be used in conjunction with either 97810 or 97813)
Remember, billing with incorrect acupuncture CPT and ICD codes can lead to claim rejections and delays in payments, which can have a devastating impact on generating revenue and keeping you in business.
